How to choose UV ink for your printer and substrate

Compatibility is more than a printer model. Use these seven factors to make a focused comparison.

1. Confirm the printhead

The printhead family and its operating requirements are the first screening criteria. Give your supplier the exact head model rather than only the printer brand.

2. Identify the curing system

LED-UV and mercury-lamp systems have different operating profiles. Confirm lamp type, wavelength information when available, and current production settings.

3. List your real substrates

Adhesion can vary greatly across acrylic, PVC, glass, metal, coated board and flexible films. Test on the exact material used in production.

4. Define rigid or flexible use

A formulation suited to rigid signage may not provide the flexibility required for bent or rolled media. Describe finishing, cutting and bending steps.

5. Compare the complete color set

Beyond CMYK, your workflow may require white, varnish or light colors. Evaluate density, layering and curing behavior as a system.

6. Run a controlled sample test

Record nozzle condition, color, adhesion, curing, odor and production stability. Avoid judging a product only from a small visual print.

7. Share purchasing requirements

Expected monthly volume, bottle size, private-label needs and destination affect the appropriate supply plan.
